Costume designers, set designers, electricians, tailors, make-up artists and stage craftsmen, light and sound designers: these are some of the professional figures who work behind the scenes, necessary for the staging of a theater show and an opera. Professions of great specialization and mastery, which remain in the shadows and of which the public only sees the magnificence of the final result, in the great performances of the most important Italian theatres, ignoring the great and tenacious commitment that precedes the opening of the curtain. Artisanal knowledge that accompanies and makes possible the work of artists on stage, actors, singers, musicians and dancers, extras and extras, giving substance to the imaginative ideas of directors, set designers and librettists.
This year, produced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, precisely to enhance this Italian intangible cultural asset and convey it to the world, a docuseries was created in four languages entitled Mano d’Opera, composed of five twenty-minute episodes each, which explores the history and evolution of the most important professions of the great Italian opera (including lighting, costumes and scenography) through the experiences of the workers of the main Italian opera houses. Thanks to the testimonies of set designers, costume designers and light designers, Mano d’Opera reveals to the public the “invisible professions” that make this ancient art form possible
Directed by Stefano di Buduo and Alessio Lavacchi, Mano d’Opera is produced by the Florentine production company Berta Film of Carolina Pezzini, Stefano Mutolo and Raika Khosravi, which already has over 20 works to its credit, including feature films, short films and documentaries, including of which, the award-winning film Europa, by Haider Rashid, supported by the Toscana Film Commission and Pietro Marcello’s latest title, Duse, which features Valeria Bruni Tedeschi in the cast.
